We sought clarity on the company's strategy to address water shortages in its operating regions, particularly through initiatives that benefit both its operations and local communities.

Engagement Rationale

Water scarcity and climate change present significant operational and environmental risks for the mining sector. We engaged with the company to better understand how it is managing these risks while supporting the long-term sustainability of its operations and the surrounding communities.

Our Engagement

We sought clarity on the company’s strategy to address water shortages in its operating regions, particularly through initiatives that benefit both its operations and local communities. We also engaged regularly whenever environmental performance metrics deteriorated or progress towards environmental targets slowed. During these engagements, we requested an explanation for the underlying drivers, discussed the company’s plans to address the issues, and assessed whether appropriate measures were being implemented to improve performance.

Outcomes

The company has implemented a comprehensive water strategy focused on reducing operational water consumption, improving efficiency and supporting community water security through initiatives such as borehole refurbishment and regional water supply schemes. Through our ongoing engagements, management has consistently provided transparent explanations for changes in environmental performance, outlining the operational factors contributing to these outcomes and the actions being taken to improve them. The company has demonstrated progress over time by implementing targeted initiatives, including renewable energy projects that are expected to materially reduce Scope 2 emissions, while continuing to improve its overall environmental performance.

Next Steps

We will continue engaging with the company to monitor progress against its water stewardship objectives, emissions reduction targets and broader environmental commitments, ensuring that performance continues to improve and that any emerging challenges are addressed proactively.
